Doctor Who

November 24th, 2013 (04:49 pm)

In short: Loved it.
We watched it at our local cinema in 3D with a bunch of very dear friends. We loved it, even though we haven't enjoyed the last few episodes much.
It was great to see Ten again. Would have loved a short guest stint of Nine, too, but hey, one can't have everything.

Sherlock Holmes

September 11th, 2013 (10:58 pm)

Gee, I love the internet! I just found an audio clip on youtube of a play my husband and I saw during our honeymoon to London - 25 years ago!

I adore Cumberbatch's Sherlock (and enjoy Rober Downey Jr.'s too, and Johnny Lee Miller's), but I will always love Jeremy Brett's rendition - both on TV and on stage. He was magnificent!

There is also an wonderful German comedy "Der Mann der Sherlock Holmes war" - filmed in 1937 - with Hans Albers and Heinz Rühmann playing Holmes and Watson... well not quite, but that would be giving away the twist... when I watched it as a little girl, I fell in love with the characters right away. I find it amazing how Holmes is one of the most beloved characters ever. He survives everything, even tongue-in-cheek movies like "Without a Clue". Granted, not all Holmes movies are great, but most of them are at least interesting.

If you asked me who my favourite ficticious character is, on 8 out of 10 days I'd say Holmes. On the ninth day I'd say Spike, on the tenth something like The Doctor, Buffy, Dracula, or Malcolm Reynolds...

Buying poetry is fun

August 9th, 2013 (11:32 pm)

I love love love Carol Ann Duffy's poetry!!!! *bounces up and down*
I had to share this, otherwise I would have exploded. ;)

Seriously? She's an amazing poet. Very accessible and clever, with modern images.

So, it occurs to me that there are probably many more poets that I should give a try. If you have a favourite (modern) poet that you'd like to recommend, please, feel free to tell me - and tell me which anthology I should start with. I'm in a poetry buying mood. :D

Creative writing

July 19th, 2013 (05:55 pm)

I attended an absolutely fabulous block seminar on Creative Writing in English that was on offer at our local university. Our teacher taught (literary) creative writing in England for ten years (University level, not just the usual painting-by-numbers affair on how to build marketable plots), but now she's here, in our town, and I hope there will be more workshops forthcoming.
She covered a lot of ground - and got us writing all week. We met every day from 10-5 pm, with a one hour lunch break, and now I have locations, character sketches, short scenes, and vignettes as well as several first drafts for poems. Yay!
She is NOT a nerd but was very inclusive. So there was some friction that never turned into aggression, but that made things more invigorating.

Incidentally, I wrote a very pro-Nerd poem, which I may share in a few days, once I've given it a bit of a polish.

Now I am ab-so-lute-ly knackered. Happy, but knackered.

Do you have a favourite workshop/writing course anecdote you'd like to share? Or a recommendation?

Hmm, does anyone know what happend to Moonythestrals? Her LJ is deleted and purged. I went looking for her famous MERLIN AU, because I wanted a friend to read it. And discovered that it's gone! Oh no!
You think that the good fanfic stays online forever, and then it doesn't. I have to say that I am very greatful that Allaboutspike is still up there, hosting all those brilliant stories that Laura gathered over the years. Thank you, rusty_halo.

RL stuff and Veronica Mars movie casting squee

June 11th, 2013 (08:44 am)

I've been extremely quiet on LJ - because I'm extremely busy in RL.
I have been asked to participate in a poetry project - which would be the first time I see one of my English poems published. Yay.
I also had big trouble at work, with reduced hours now, which I'd be happy about if we didn't need the money so much... Which is why I started job hunting.
I am working on a pen and paper roleplaying game scenario, which I can actually publish (the publisher is waiting for the manuscript)
I have been collaborating on a bilingual play with a very lovely lady who has a degree in creative writing and who is a published poet who has won several awards. Yay!!!
As you can see, I'm pretty busy.
Right now, I'm on sick leave because a cold struck me down. Bah. But at least that gives me the time and opportunity to SQUEE at the news that Francis Capra joined the Veronica Mars cast. I always liked Weevil, even though I was always sorry, that he seemed destined to one day die in jail or get shot in the streets. I doubt Weevil will get much more than a cameo in the forthcoming movie, but even so, I'm happy that he's part of the big VM reunion. :)

Just wondering: is anyone else watching Hannibal? I've seen the first two episode. It's fascinating - a lot like a train crash - you can't look away, yet you're apppalled at the same time. Pretty dark. I was suprised to hear Lecter quote The Medusa Touch (a movie with Richard Burton and Lino Ventura).

I like how Will Graham is similar to Will Petersen in Manhunt, the first Hannibal Lecter movie (where HL had a small role, and which had a super soundtrack). But for me Jack Crawford will always look like Scott Glenn. :)

I actually managed to go to the movies the other day. We saw Oblivion. I enjoyed it, even though I saw most of the mayor plot twists coming from miles away. Still, the visuals were great, the story clever-ish, with some clunky exposition but good ideas, and I still enjoy watching Tom Cruise (guilty pleasure).

We also watched the Hobbit, as soon as our Bluray arrived. Love love love the opening half hour, the one that some reviewers claimed was too slow. Idiots! Don't they know that I could watch the Dwarves eat and sing and do the dishes for hours?!
The same way I could watch a Firefly episode where nothing happens except daily stuff like cooking, working out, playing funny ball etc. *sigh*

Seeing that Veronica Mars will get a movie sequel thanks to kickstarter - YAY! (and I really hope they'll somehow include poor Weevil) - maybe we should crowdfund a movie set in the Firefly universe? I'd pay good money!

Hmm, I think I'm falling out of love with this show.
Can't quite put my finger on the Why. Maybe it's because it no longer feels transgressive and tongue-in-cheek?
I was impressed with the guest stars, and the premise was always interesting enough, but I still found the past few episodes dull; illogical too.

Also, I can't quite warm up to Clara. To me the companion is supposed to be the common earth girl or person, the one real and solid anchor in all the fantasy. With Amelia Pond they departed from that principle, but at least Rory always felt real, in spite of his centurion story. Clara feels unreal, and therefore the show no longer feels real-ish either. Does that make sense?

So, I want to enjoy the show, but somehow I no longer do. Well, I'll check out what you guys have to say in your posts. Maybe you know why....

Veronica Mars

April 13th, 2013 (09:29 am)

I'm so pleased that the Veronica Mars movie reached all its Kickstarter goals. Yay!
I know, I've been incommuncado - again.
Maybe it's the long winter, but for a while we were all sick, one after the other, and then we had some catching up to do. Plus the literary club that I'm in, Writers Ink. e.V. has been eating a lot of time.
But, the upside is: I am co-working on a play that will see the stagelight in October and I have been invited to contribute an as yet to be written 30-40 line poem to an anthology that is due to be published around Halloween. Whoohooo.

My little one is having a "Jugendweihe" soon, i.e. a youth initiation ceremony, a non-christian version of confirmation, and that keeps me busy busy busy, but I wanted to briefly stop by, wave and tell you I'm not gone, just busy.

Something to cheer you up

March 18th, 2013 (03:43 pm)

current mood: happy
current song: van canto

I am not normally very proud of my country, but hey, Germans make great Heavy Metal. :)
Nothing fannish, just a silly a capella metal vid to chase away the Monday/winter gloom...

I love this show so much! Episode 2.17 did not disappoint. *beams*
I think I should go looking for a nice icon. Preferably of Howard, John and Bear in the rain. Oh yeah!

My family free weekend - so far

March 2nd, 2013 (06:59 pm)

current mood: awake

The familiy is off to Stuttgart to dance in a competition. Yay! I grabbed the opportunity to get my nails done, eat out at the steakhouse and spend a free movie ticket on Life of Pi.
Have to say the steak was expensive but not very good. When I order a large rumpsteak I don't expect about a third of the steak to consist of fat. I know, rumpsteaks come with fat on one side, but this one had fat on three. :( And I had been looking forward to my steak for weeks!
Luckily, Life of Pi was worth watching. I never knew what would happen next - which is a rare treat. Beautiful cinematography, very clever story with a neat twist that I honestly didn't see coming, but which made total sense with hindsight. Also, Depardieu's brief cameo was brilliant. Gee, he was revolting! I have a few issues with some of the dialogue which sometimes sounded pompous, but that may have been the synchronization.
We had a really mild day today, even some sunshine. The city was packed with people. Everybody seemed so happy that finally the snow is gone...

As for the rest of the weekend... well, some Fringe, some tidying up, and, hopefully some writing tomorrow. :)

Still on sick leave :(

February 18th, 2013 (08:03 am)

current mood: sick

I've got the kind of cold that leaves you exhausted and completely indifferent to anything more complicated than watching TV. So, while I get to spend time at home, I am not really up to getting any writing done. :( Talked to my colleague on the phone. She said: "Don't you dare come back and dump your germs on me!" Thankfully, that takes care of my bad conscience for staying home. I could of course search LJ and AO3 for suitable fanfic now, but I'm honestly too tired :(
Still, one shouldn't underestimate the healing power of good wholesome h/c fanfic, the literary equivalent of chicken soup, so if you know a good chicken soupy story for me to read, feel free to rec. Doesn't have to be Jossverse, HP or Elementary or Sherlock is fine, too. :)
